Before answer the question: How exactly is the best yoga class? Let’s distinguish first, the differences between group class and individual private class.
In the group classes the student has some space to adapt and personalize the poses to his possibilities, but he needs to go with the flow and do what everybody else is doing.
In individual classes the student has much more possibilities for personalization. Besides the possibility of a “tailor made” physical pose, respecting the needs of the student, in a private class it’s possible to personalize many other aspects: the duration of the class, the rhythm, the order and the amount of techniques.
The dynamic of practicing in group has its benefits:
- the synergy of the group. Everybody is supporting each other;
- if you don’t have any special needs, a group class probably can offer everything you need to have an efficient and a long-term sustainable practice;
But group classes sometimes can have its distractions:
- some students may prefer the group classes not because they diligently want to learn Yoga, but because they are looking first for social interaction. Nothing wrong with social interaction, but the yoga room should be first a place for concentration and self-study, otherwise the learning process can be hampered;
- some students may imitate the others instead to perform their own personal version of the practice.
What then is the best practice for you?
There are hundreds of yoga methods, different approaches and different dynamics. I think that the best yoga practice is the practice that will attend your urgent needs for that moment. If you have some special needs, if you are pregnant for example, or if you have some injury or any other special condition, an individual private class is probably the most recommended for you.
If group classes are what you need for the moment, you need then to choose some method or approach that will bring you what your body or mind is asking. For instance, a practice that emphasize strength, or elasticity, recovery, or a practice with more meditation and breathing exercises.
It is important as well to find a teacher that you trust. You will only have a good experience and benefits if you open yourself for adopting the same method for at least certain amount of time, let’s say 3 months.
